The analysis and application of performance content utilizing new media technologies and distribution - - specifically the Internet and the World Wide Web. Production work will focus on web design and Internet distribution of content (HTML, Animation, Flash, digital imaging, digitization of audio and video). Performance work will focus on traditional and emerging techniques.

Technical Skills

This class will cover a lot of ground about the Internet, the World Wide Web, networking, email, digital imaging, digital audio, and more. You will feel like you are drinking water from a fire hose...fear not... many have gone before you and come out successful Cyber gurus!

The first priority of the class is to learn as well as to enjoy the learning process. The Internet is fun, informative, educational, and addictive; it is a tool that is maturing into a method of communications that is utilized globally. We will look at various methods of communicating your message to others using cyber space via the web, networks, satellite or cybernetic implants.

More importantly, we will look at what it takes to create a true ‘Performance’ via the Internet, and the creation of the content for that performance. Remember that content is king!

3. There will be information from class lectures, presentations, and guest lectures. In addition, there are reference materials that you may check out from the lab.

Class Requirements

Participation in the class is worth 35 points of your grade.

Read and surf the Internet BEFORE you come to class. This class will be participation by all, and in order to participate you have to explore and discover cool new things on the web, encoding files, playing files. Looking at what other people have done as well as seeing at what is successful and popular will be helpful in your learning process. (Although just because something is popular does not necessarily mean it is good). Come up with your own fresh new ideas.

1. There will be homework assignments, quizzes, and in-class exercises. You are encouraged to utilize the department's Multimedia Lab. You will find all of the hardware and the software you will need to complete your assignments. All web assignments will be uploaded to a designated private file that will be set up for you.
2. Weekly class participation will be worth 35 points of your Grade
3. You must set up an email account, set up and maintain a web site on the SJSU Server (you will get an account from Professor Fortune), worth 5 points of your grade
4. There will be Written Tests worth 25 points of your grade.
5. The Class Projects and Final Class Project will be worth 45 points of your grade.

The final project will be a performance based project/web site that communicates your unique talents and skills, and may be a combined effort of a group of students. Web pages will be provided to the Instructor and will be uploaded to the server.

There is the opportunity to participate as a group for all project, we will discuss this as the class goes on.

You are strongly encouraged to participate in KSJS 90.5 FM, the SJSU radio station. This course provides you with a unique 'hands-on' experience in performance, production, and programming, which is very exciting.

GRADING: You will formally receive your grades twice during the semester - - after the Midterm and after completion of all your projects. You will meet personally with Professor Fortune throughout the semester to discuss your individual progress, take suggestions of design, content and programming -- and receive recommendations for projects, including ideas for your final project
