There are three parts to a Step Unit. The
side supports are called Carriages. There are at least two, one on each
side of the unit. There should be a carriage every three to four feet. A
four foot wide unit needs only two carriages and an eight foot wide unit
needs three (one in the middle). How many carriages are needed for a six
foot wide unit?
The Facings are added to the
carriage to support the treads and run from outside to outside
of the carriages. The facings are made from 1 x stock and are glued and
fastened with 1 1/2" narrow crown staples. They face the actor as they
climb the steps.
The Treads support the feet and
are attached to the carriages and the facings. They fit on top of the first
facing and in front of the second facing.
Test question: Draw a section view of a three step, step unit
and lable the parts.
