Before floating a flat the area floor should be swept. Be careful to warn others in the area to turn away or watch their eyes for dust.

The flat needs to be "footed" and if two people are handling the flat only one should be the one to let the flat fall. The first time this is demonstrated the new people will need to see it done before they trust the results.

Always handle flats by their styles, rails or toggles, and try not to press against the muslin covering.

Dimples in a covering can sometimes be removed by applying spray starch to the back side around the indent.
