Stage Manager Fellowship
Information and Forms

The Stage Manager Fellowship was founded in 1998, under the direction of Dr. Robert Jenkins . With the energy and collaboration of the Fellows and support from Randy Earle, Betty Poindexter and Jim Culley the Fellowship provides our Department with a stable and prepared core of Stage Managers.

Student are identified and targeted for the program their Freshman and Sophomore years or upon entry as transfer Juniors. (Interested students should contact Professor Culley for an application form.) We want applicants to commit for two years. A Junior year Fellow should work on one production a semester as either an Assistant Stage Manager or as the Stage Manager to a Todd Theatre production. A Senior year Fellow should Stage Manager one or more University Theatre productions and/or serve as an Assistant Director for a University Theatre production. Fellows choose an internship their Senior year with a local professional company. Student are encouraged to participate in summer theatre, travel, and/or work over-hire with the local unions or rental houses.

The Department needs and encourages interested students to apply for and to work backstage as Production Crew Heads, ASMs and/or Stage Managers. We need at least six "non-Fellows" each semester to fill vital production positions. Actors are strongly encouraged to add this important skill to their resume. Non-Majors are welcomed and wanted. Student must enroll for DR 191 unites to work backstage. (1 to 2 units is normal.)

Due to the significant time demand on Stage Managers the program of study allows for two substitutions for upper division departmental course work. We recognize the time demands are considerable. Student must be academically dedicated to keep up with the normal demands of full time university study.

Many students work 10 hours per week as paid assistants in one of the shops (scene shop, costume shop, costume rental, prop shop, prop rental, box office, or electrical shop.) Fellows are encouraged to apply for "work study" money. Internships are encouraged with local professional theatre.

Our Fellowship is underwritten by Mrs. Darlene Shiley, a generous benefactor.

We will continue to work faithfully to make rehearsals and performances an enlightening and artful experience for actors, directors, technicians and our audiences.
